Emil Danailov Popov graduated in sculpture at the National Academy of Arts, Sofia under Prof. Lyuben Dimitrov. He works in small plastic and monumental sculpture. Teacher and professor at the National Academy of Arts. Works by Emil Popov are owned by the National Gallery, Sofia Art Gallery and art galleries in the country, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the National Museums of Warsaw and Prague, the Dante Museum in Ravenna, the MOST Museum in Norway, the Peter Ludwig Collection in Aachen (Germany) and Hugo Wooten in Belgium.
Emil Popov is certainly not neo-avant-garde, on the contrary – he is one of the most folk artists, turned towards spiritual matter.
The bold move in his work is that he shows this folk and spirituality in a free manner, which is not bound by classical conventions in art.
The author is concerned with fundamental questions about man as a species – ancestral memory, faith, human nature, the value of life, which is at odds with most contemporary practices in art, which rather aim to scandalize, provoke and emphasize the grotesque in which we live.
His love for animals began in his childhood, and this period is of utmost importance to him, because children are closest to nature, with their absolute purity and sharpness of perception.
“...My first memories start from my barn – horses, oxen, sheep. This coziness.. You are struck by the warmth and presence of other creatures. You love to communicate with them... ..Animals are my beginning, and I am a genetically-owned peasant. This is a warm topic that I do not want to part with...." – says the artist
