From its premiere in the competition program at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015, "Sicario" was described by The Guardian as "a gripping, uncompromising thriller," while Variety called it "one of the most tense and confidently directed American films of the year." More than a decade later, Denis Villeneuve's film is regarded as a modern classic.
FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) is drawn into a top-secret operation against Mexican drug cartels along the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Under the guidance of government agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and the mysterious consultant Alejandro (Benicio del Toro), the mission gradually reveals a world where the line between law and retribution becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish.

"This is a film about America," says Denis Villeneuve in an interview with The Guardian. According to him, "Sicario" explores idealism, realism, and the belief that violence can solve problems beyond one's own borders.

"Sicario" is the first produced screenplay by Taylor Sheridan, who later continues to explore the modern American frontier in "Hell or High Water" and "Wind River."
Behind the camera is Roger Deakins, whom Roger Ebert notes turns every scene into an exercise in visual tension, while the music by Johan Johansson – featuring the iconic composition "The Beast" – becomes one of the most recognizable film themes of the decade.
