Four decades of love for the magic of the seventh art, full halls, and shared emotions – this autumn, "Kinomania" celebrates its 40th edition!

On this occasion, the film forum will turn into a true celebration. In the second half of November – as tradition dictates, the festival will present the strongest, most discussed, and award-winning titles from Cannes, Venice, Toronto, and Karlovy Vary shortly after their world premieres. 

The official opening will be marked by the exclusive premiere of the long-awaited new film by Martin McDonagh, "The Banshees of Inisherin." The audience will enjoy the black comedy based on the original screenplay by the director on November 12 at 19:00 in Hall 1 of the NDK. 

As in the iconic "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," "In Bruges," "Seven Psychopaths," and "The Banshees of Inisherin," which garnered nearly 20 Oscar nominations and over 30 BAFTA nominations, the modern master with Irish roots once again relies on a colossal cast. At the Venice International Film Festival, John Malkovich won the prestigious "Coppa Volpi" award for Best Actor, and the international press described his on-screen duo with Sam Rockwell as "electrifying." 

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN
In 1973, shortly before the military coup in Chile, veteran CIA agent Chris (John Malkovich) takes stock of his life. Together with his young protégé and close friend Lee (Sam Rockwell), he travels to the isolated Easter Island Rapa Nui under the pretext of a vacation. 

Amid the iconic statues of the island, while the long-time partners grapple with their dark past, Chris's budding relationship with two rebellious students threatens to turn the journey to this remote paradise upside down.

The opening night on November 12 will also feature the special short film by the duo Boris Misirkov and Georgi Bogdanov from "Agitprop" – two of the most talented and curious documentary filmmakers in our country. Through previously unseen footage and interviews, the production tells the long-standing story of "Kinomania" – four decades that began with the phenomenon "World Film Panorama" in 1987 – a time when the festival consistently expands its horizons towards world cinema and establishes itself as one of the most anticipated cultural events.

The "Kinomania" festival is organized by the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in partnership with the "I Have an Idea" foundation. The project is realized with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture, the National Film Center, and the Sofia Municipality. "Kinomania" is part of the Calendar of Cultural Events of the Sofia Municipality for 2026.
